Funeral planning
At the funeral liturgy, the Church gathers with the family and friends of the deceased to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the Paschal Mystery.
Funeral Rites
These rites include: prayers at the time of death and thereafter, wake service, a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated for both the living and the dead, and committal (burial) in the cemetery as the final resting place.
Funeral Preparation
Every parish and priest have different workflows for helping families plan a funeral. You can pre-plan. Work with your preferred funeral home to plan your funeral now so your family doesn’t have to and they can feel confident on following your wishes.
1. Prayers after Death
If the family so desires, a priest can visit a home, hospital, or nursing home to offer prayers after the death of a loved one.
2. Funeral Home
It’s easier to coordinate plans (times and locations) through the funeral home. The funeral home contact will schedule a meeting with the family.
3. Parish Contact
Please do not hesitate, if you wish, to reach out to the parish to inform them of the passing of a loved one. The parish community can also begin offering prayers for the family and your loved one. A meeting with the parish contact can be scheduled at this time.
4. Readings and Music
During a meeting with the parish priest, you will have the opportunity to walk through what the funeral rites will look like. You may select readings and and music as a family.
