Pastorate of the Diocese of Sioux Falls
St. John's Parish
The first Mass was said in Plankinton in December 1881 by Fr. Tobin from Mitchell. From 1881, Mass was said in the upstairs of the hardware store or in private residences.
In 1884, a foundation was laid on the west part of town for a church, but was never used. In 1885, the old school was bought and moved to the present location. This served as the church for eleven years. In 1894, Fr. Hoffman came to Plankinton and built the second St. John's Church in 1896.
From 1881 to 1904, the Plankinton parish was served by priests from Mitchell, White Lake, and Mount Vernon. In September 1904, Fr. Kelly was the first resident pastor. He built the present rectory in 1906.
Fr. Slattery came in September 1919, and the present church was built under his direction in 1923.
